Thread starter Timcito Start date Jan 1, Timcito Member. Messages 10, I saw my first Ovation around , when, along with another guy, I was volunteered to entertain some people at a dinner. The other guy turned up with an amazing-looking guitar that made my old wooden box seem like a reject from the Hillbillies' ball!
It was an Ovation, and ever since I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with them. I still think they produced some of the best-looking guitars ever; however, sometimes the acoustic sound hasn't been too brilliant. I'd love to go for the supposed top-of-the-range Ovation and splash out on an Adamas, but they ain't half pricey What's your view?
Do you like to have an O in your life, or are you unimpressed? Ovations seem to polarize people - they either love them or hate them! Messages 18, I had an American made Balladeer Standard or Special, cannot recall. It had the "normal" top with the one sound hold and was natural in color.
It had a deep bowl. I traded it last year to someone for a Vox Valvetronix amp that is now my practice amp. I feel bad about it now because I treated that guitar very poorly.
I changed strings once a year at best, never cleaned my fret board or strings, etc. I was dumb and didn't know any better but if I had taken better care of that guitar it would've gotten a better trade. Still, it was a great guitar and it served me well. My only complaint was it was hard to sit and play because the deep plastic bowl would cause it to slide down my body and not sit in place. Timcito said:. In what way s , apart from the sliding issue, do you find your Taylors so superior to the Ovation?
Messages 4, When I was a kid, I thought they looked awesome. When I finally got around to playing one, I became much less excited. I have a friend who plays an Ovation in his band, due to his gut, the playing position becomes almost flat with the ground.
Ergonomically, they just don't work for people with a stomach. Playing guitar shouldn't feel like I'm trying to stack beach balls. If I came across as saying Taylors were "superior" to Ovations then I was misunderstood and I apologize. Likewise - sorry, by "superior" I meant superior to you and not in any objective sense. Messages I like Ovations. Bill Kaman with Ovation Charles Kaman. Charles Kaman - Kaman Aerospace Co.
Ovation 5 piece Maple and Mahogany neck. Barcus-Berry transducer guitar pickup. Ovation Model Country Artist volume control. Current Glen Campbell Model. Ovation Model Ovation Adamas Sound Board. Updated Cutaway Adamas models. Applause Balladeer.
Elite TX 8 String. Melissa Etheridge with her Ovation. Adrian Legg with his Adamas. Martin D I have not played an Asian made Ovation yet but find the US made ones outstanding.
Great playability and pleasant and balanced sound. My Adamas with carbon fibre top also has huge sustaining bass definitely no lack of boom there. I'm a recent fan. Doubt this will be my last Ovation. I'm very impressed. I imagine the deep bodied ones sound even better acoustically. Find all posts by mr. Back around , right when Heart was coming on to the scene, I noticed Nancy Wilson used an Ovation so I always "assumed" they were really good guitars.
Maybe those older ones were a bazillion times better, but the ones I played at GC were horribly dead sounding unless plugged in. Plugged in they quack.
I don't get the popularity of them? An ovation was one of the first guitars I learned to play on so there is a nostalgic element to me with them. I wouldn't buy one today though. Because of their distinctive sound I think Ovations, as much as any guitar, fall into the "love it" or "hate it" category.
Personally, I really love the sound but I don't find them very comfortable to play for a couple of reasons. First, the round back and sides slip around on my lap too much when sitting. Second, the nuts tend to be on the narrow side and I prefer a bit more room. I have a celebrity that I like plugged in but not to keen on the sound unplugged. Glen Campbell one of the greatest guitar players and entertainers of all time made a name for Ovation back in the 70's and the reason I own one.
Here is a video of him playing Gentle on my mind. About into it Glen has a pretty nice solo. Originally Posted by ohYew All times are GMT The time now is AM. User Name.
